Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ)?
A: Please click here to learn more about Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
Q: I’m completely new to BJJ. Is there a beginner’s class?
A: From our experience, beginners classes do not allow novices to improve as quickly as training with more experienced practitioners. Just like any sport, practicing with better opponents is the fastest way to get better. Egos are left at the door at Submit! BJJ. Safety is always a high priority for instructors and fellow students. Advanced students mentor and coach new ones, and all of us seek to improve together as a team.
Q: Do I need to be in shape to join?
A: No. Practicing BJJ regularly will get you in the best shape of your life. Some students lose 20+ pounds in the first few months of training. BJJ training will improve your endurance, strength, flexibility and coordination
Q: I am over the age of 50, is it still safe for me to practice Jiu-Jitsu?
A: Jiu-Jitsu is safe for practitioners of all ages. Many grappling competitions have 50+ age divisions. You can practice BJJ regardless of body shape, age, or level of fitness.
Q: Do I have to fight or compete?
A: No. No matter why you want to start training, we will help you achieve your goals.
Q: What will my first class be like?
A: At Submit! BJJ, you can choose to stop in on one of our classes to simply watch and observe. This is beneficial for students who are new to BJJ and want to decide if it is right for them. If you choose to participate and have no prior grappling experience, you’ll be paired up with a more experienced student to help walk you through and learn the basic techniques.
